The OMA is an industry body sustained through the efforts of its members and supported by grants and collaborations. Oil Mallee is custodian of the Oil Mallee database which contains details of plantings across all Oil Mallee regions, complete with details of growers, species planted and other issues of interest.
The OMA is constantly improving the manner in which the information is kept and managed and respects the need to maintain confidentiality of growers identity, location and details of the resource. The OMA received funding in 2006, which led to the holding of a national seminar in Canberra to draw attention to the emergence of the oil mallee industry on to the national stage. This was followed closely by a national conference in 2007, which attracted over 150 farmers to Perth.
It is now collaborating with a wide range of partners to ensure that the policy parameters and guidelines, which will govern how the Commonwealth intends to recognise reforestation in the CPRS, are not detrimental to the opportunities that might be available to farmers.
Oil Mallee Australia has been backed by the Caring for Our Country initiative to review and lift the Oil Mallee Code of Practice to a new level of industry relevance. Over the last six months a Reference Committee has examined the structure and implementation of the Code, and drafted a new set of Minimum Standards to give it backbone and meaning in the marketplace for mallees. The OMA is developing services to assist members and interested parties. As an industry association we take an active role in policy discussions and represent our members on relevant committees and panels. Advice is readily available and we have advocates across the WA Wheatbelt who are willing to take a call or even visit your farm. There are also "Mallee Mentors" who have a special expertise in a given area who can advise on particular aspects of the industry. Please contact the OMA for details of your nearest Mallee Mentor.
A particular focus of the OMA is in the area of carbon and renewable energy policy and there is significant expertise and knowledge within our management and membership.
